EMMA DAVIS

Emma was born in 1971. After gaining a Foundation BTEC diploma in Art and Design at Northbrook College of Design and Technology, Sussex, she continued her passion for Fine Art completing a BA Honours Degree at Wolverhampton University in 1993.

Emma Davis has designed for card companies for a number of years, producing a full range of stationery, wrapping paper, cards, books, mugs and calendars. Her bright comic images have been sold and licensed to companies such as Marks and Spencer and W.H.Smiths. She has also received two book commissions, and has exhibited original works extensively throughout the UK.

Emma's first two screenprints were published by the CCA Galleries in 1999.

The inspiration behind much of Emma Davis' work comes from the quirky anomalies of nature. Flowers that possess a plastic and artificial quality, such as Gerberas, Cornflowers and Tulips all containing elements of the unnatural or solid. Yet it is precisely this conflict between the real and the unreal that produces such playful, gestural and vibrant pieces of art. Colour and the rough textural use of paint is of great importance to Emma's works, admitting that the paintings on canvas " often evolve on their own," almost as an organic process sympathetic to the subject matter she chooses to paint.

The use of text in correlation with the scratchy surface adds individuality to each piece. The words can be interpreted as memories, snippets of conversation all of which act as a part of Emma's thought process.
